The emirate Sharjah is both the 3rd largest and 3rd most populated of the UAE's seven emirates. Many people consider Sharjah to be the cultural center for the Emirate and it is known for being very conservative in comparison to the flashy and ritzy neighboring Dubai. Many European and American tourists are surprised to find that the emirate is 100% zero alcohol and more traditional than both Dubai and Abu Dhabi.
Sharjah contributes to the cultural heritage of the UAE and is home to nearly 800,000 people. It is a popular travel destination for Muslims partly due to the zero alcohol policy. It is the home to many great museums, forts, and historical heritage sites.
The capital city of the Emirate Sharjah is also named Sharjah. The Al-Qasami family has ruled the region for more than 200 years.
